Another month gone by....and we are in the lazy days of summer. It time to get your thinking caps on...whats the title of this piece going to be?  A little hint: a dear friend of mine went to Maui this month (lucky her huh?) and she took a LONG drive along the coast....and the sand is really almost black. Good luck everyone. Remember the winner for best title gets a free set of J Hill Paintings note cards and announced in my monthly newsletter.  Look for the winner of best title for "Untitled #6" in there too.

A Still-Life a la Julie Hill -SOLD!

"Little Moment #13"
watercolor, 6" x 6"
Painting on Arches paper mounted on archival museum board,
UV and archival varnish coated. Display easel included.
SOLD

Julie- "Kelley, I am really not at all inspired to paint much today....really struggling"
Kelley- "Girlfriend, what's your favorite fruit?"

Julie- "Kelley....we are talking painting here, not eating"

Kelley- "I know, I know, just listen...I love the way you splatter the paint...just go to the kitchen, slice an orange and paint it"

Julie- "Wait a minute, are you telling me to do a still-life?....I don't DO still-lifes...you know that?

Kelley- "Just go and try it"
Julie- "OK"
So what does Julie do.....and this is just between us....I go to the computer (not the refrigerator), pull up an old photo I have, print it up in black and white, and paint away.

Kelley, you know I don't DO still-lifes....love ya girlfriend...but you did get me out of my painting slump! so thanks again!

P.S. If I actually got to the refrigerator and pulled out the bowl of cherries...and proceeded to eat them while painting these cherries...does that count for a "bit of a still-life"?

"Italian Doorway"

"Italian Doorway"
watercolor (5.5" x 8.5")

It's a simple doorway, but yet when you say "Italian Doorway" it just feels better doesn't it?  Life is like that too.  Sometimes, the simple things just need to be said with a little more flair to be felt in the right way.  Sometimes, just adding a little something to the simple tasks make them a bit more fun.  Sometimes, a simple outfit just needs that little accessory to make it just right. Sometimes, a simple conversation with a friend needs just a little bit of humor to make it special.
Today, I need to discover what that little something is to make make sweeping the floors in my house a little more enjoyable. What is your little something?

A Day at Fort Mill -SOLD!

"A Day at Fort Mill"
watercolor (10" x 8")
SOLD
There a times when modern technology is truly a blessing.  Because of the internet and blogging I have recently made some fantastic acquaintances both inside and outside the artist arena. One new friend is Caroline Simas, she is a wonderful graphic designer and writes a blog called "Designing for the Soul", it truly is a treat to see her inspirational products and hear her lovely stories. Anyway, one day while reading her blog, I came across this photo of two of her sweet children playing...and instantly "felt it".  She has kindly let me paint it.

Your Face Towards the Sun -Sold!

"Little Moment #12"
watercolor, 6" x 6"
SOLD

I have found there are people who adore Sunflowers, and then there are those who "don't really trip on them". Personally, I am not really sure where my feelings are on them...but I have to admit, I got a little bit fonder of Sunflowers after I heard my friend Karen speak of them as the flower that always looks to the sun...and that she too was like a Sunflower...always looking forward, never back, looking at the sun and with no regrets. Are you a Sunflower?

Little 'Scape #3

"Little 'Scape #3"
watercolor (5" x 7")
Painting on Arches paper mounted on archival museum board,
UV and archival varnish coated. Display easel included.
Available at Segil Fine Art Gallery

Today's painting is of the Langham Huntington Hotel here in Pasadena (formally known as the Ritz Carlton Huntington Hotel).  Its a fabulous place to treat yourself to...a day spa or pool side terrace lunch, or a romantic get away.  Take a moment...visualize yourselves walking through their lush gardens...aah...now wasn't that a nice and quick get away (you didn't even need to subject yourselves to the "check out -balance due" shock factor)

Little Moment #10- SOLD!

"Little Moment #10"
watercolor (6" x 6")
Painting on Arches paper mounted on archival museum board,
UV and archival varnish coated. Display easel included.
SOLD

I had so much fun with Kelley's Gerber Daisy, that I decided to do a few more flowers.  This is a Calla Lily.  Did you know that the Calla Lilies are endemic to southern Africa.  They grow naturally in marsh areas and that all parts of the plant are very toxic (unlike pansies, which are edible).  When I hear things like this, it kinda amazes me...that something so pretty can be so poisonous!!  It seems such a contradiction of sorts, unless God, in His magnificent way...is protecting these plants so that their beauty may be admired yet not eaten by predators...or maybe He is teaching us...just because something or someone is beautiful on the outside it doesn't necessary mean that they are the same on the inside.
Are you a Calla Lilly or a Pansy?

Calling all girlfriends!

Remember that feeling in grade school....running around the school yard saying
"I have a new bestfriend!!!"
Well, I recently got that feeling...and today is her birthday!

She's the friend that even though it's only been a few months in each others lives, you feel like you've known her forever...and nothing she does or says surprises you.

She's the friend that because of shared interests and "issues".... you always have something to talk about ...
at least several times a day.

She's the friend that it's probably a good thing she lives 3,000 miles away....because if you lived next door to her you'd never get anything done.

She's the friend that no matter how the conversation starts,
we always end up in a better place...usually with lots of laughter.

She's the friend......that loves gerber daisies.

Happy Birthday Kelley!!!

Escalators Out? - SOLD!

"Little Moment #8"
watercolor (6"x 6")
Painting on Arches paper mounted on archival museum board,
UV and archival varnish coated. Display easel included.
SOLD

For those of you that have been fortunate to visit Italy and all its fabulous quaint villages....I have a question for you.  Isn't it funny how when in Italy, all those stairs leading to who knows where really aren't a bother?  As a matter of fact, things that in the United States would ordinarily be a pain to most Americans daily life...aren't really a pain when in Italy. Hmmm...is it the air over there that affects our perception of things? Is it something they put in their gelato? But wouldn't it be nice to take that home with us (not the gelato... the Italian perception), like the next time the escalators are out at the local mall?

Dean's Ski Jump- SOLD!

"Dean's Ski Jump"
watercolor (6" x 8")
SOLD (commission)

This is a little story of passion and perseverance. Dean loves to ski...but he didn't start out being good at skiing.  Shortly after moving to Switzerland he realized that most of his school mates were in the top ski school...which meant Friday afternoons off and skiing!  Well that sounded grand to Dean! Dean wanted to do the ski jumps with his friends too, but only the top group of skiers within the school were allowed to jump....his desire to be the best and be with his friends pressed him on.  He eventually was able to join the Friday group and ski and do the ski jumps with his mates, but from what I hear, he was not the most elegant skier.  He had the most crashes, and this frustrated his coach to no end.  Eventually, the instructor gave up and let Dean do his own thing....including ending up with the most fractures and injuries.
When you have the passion and perseverance, and desire to just be with your friends....you never know what you may achieve!

Little Moment #7

"Little Moment #7"
watercolor (6" x 6")
Painting on Arches paper mounted on archival museum board,
UV and archival varnish coated. Display easel included.
$150 (free shipping in US)

How sweet was this moment captured.  This little doggie was very shy...the shopper was very much taken with the dog....the owner was very much accommodating "Yes, you may pet him...", "Yes, I will wait...", "Yes..." Makes me think- Not sure I would be so accommodating of someone dotting on my doggie....Not sure I would be so patient.....Not sure I would be so quick to say "yes". Hmmm, I guess that means one more moment I'd miss out on. How can we say "yes" more in our lives and thus not miss out in so many moments?

St. Lukes, Pasadena- SOLD!

"St. Lukes, Pasadena"
watercolor  (12" x 16")
PAINTING OF THE MONTH
SOLD

There are friends you like, there are friends who are your friends because of history. There are friends who come and friends who go. There are friends who stay through the years, not because of history, but because of the love.  There are friends that are there because of a shared interest...and then there are friends that become "real friends" because of the shared interest and life has brought you all closer. I am blessed to have a great group of friends through a shared interest...Jazzercize...and life bringing us closer.  This month's painting is based on the view out of the facility where we take our class.  It is a great view and they are a great group of friends.
This was my inspiration for the Painting of the Month.
