And what are we supposed to be doing while we are waiting?
"Be still and know that I am God" of my favorite Bible verses.

how about "KEEP CLEAR"?
Meaning, get out of God's he can do His miraculous stuff!

Don't mind me...I am just keeping clear.

watercolor (6" x 6")
available at Chemers Gallery

Do you remember putting playing cards beteeen the spokes of your bike?
Do you remember getting the colorful plastic spoke covers?
Do you remember the clickers that attached to the spokes?
All so that someone could hear you coming down the street.

What else do you remember about your childhood bicycle?
I remember I had a bright yellow Schwinn with a matching yellow banana seat.

Sushi Anyone?

"Sushi Anyone?"
watercolor (6" x 6")
available at Chemers Gallery

The other evening the Hill family was out for one of our local Pasadena restaurants called Houstons. It's a great dark ambient steak/seafood/sushi/salad etc place. Of course, this shot was a must I whipped my camera phone. My family has gotten quite used to this...but the friend we were with was a little amused. Then my family proceeded to say "Oh this isn't bad, she has rolled all the way up into the kitchen to get that 'perfect photo to paint'....she is being very discreet now...look not even a flash"

NYC, Golden Light

"NYC, Golden Light"
watercolor (6" x 6")
available at Chemers Gallery

The hustle and bustle of city living.
I know some people love it...preferring it to the quiet rural scene.
The quiet simple stuff I adore, with the choice to go into the craziness when needed...
Yes, suburbia works for me just fine.
How about you?

Would you like this little taste of hustle and bustle?

Donetta's Repose- Sold

 "Donetta Repose"
watercolor (22" x 30")
SOLD (commission)

A new collector of J Hill Paintings wanted a painting to go over their fireplace mantel. They were looking through my work and saw a small previously sold piece which they really liked. We discussed what they liked  about it, and that she would like more flowers too.
I love doing commissions like this...client knows exactly what they want, I get to paint my favorites: architecture, arches, fountains, sun light, and fun shadows...all that while working with a delightful people. And she helped me title it too..."Donetta's Repose". Isn't that lovely?

Hooray for Hollywood!

"Hooray for Hollywood"
watercolor (7" x 10")

Can you see it?
The distinctive and iconic sign in the distance?
Its such the LA symbol, isnt it?
Did you know that the Hollywood sign is over 45 feet tall?

Its so small from afar, yet clear as day and overbearing when up close.
Reminds me of my relationship with God and understanding His will in my life....
I am always looking for signs...
maybe I am not seeing them cause I am too far away from Him.

How would you like this little bit of iconic original art?
It's available just email me

Today, I was looking for pieces that are committed for upcoming shows

This Old Barn

 "This Old Barn"
watercolor (9" x 12")

The stories old barns could tell...
probably not as juicy as old houses, but still good stuff.
Good stuff about what it means to work hard.
Good stuff about what an honest day's wages looks like.
Good stuff about the how fathers make men out of their sons.
I wonder what This Old Barn would say?

Oh, How I Missed You! -Sold!

 "Oh, How I Missed You"
watercolor (12" x 15")

Continuing on with the sappiness...Kelley Sanford and I have a fabulous friendship.
Among other things, we share paintings in progress and seek feedback on most.
So back when I was working on my train series, I did this piece...and shared it with her.
Her response, "Like it...but LOVE the conductor in the background"
My response to her, "Yea, whatever"
Kelley said, "I think you should paint the conductor...forget the sappy couple stuff"
Again my response to her, "Yea, whatever"
Well, like any good friend would...I listened to her,
and you all remember the conductor I painted (click here)...
turns out, it was one of the first pieces of the Railway Series to sell at my solo show....
I hate it when she is right, but LOVE that I am still sappy and she ain't.

Today's sappy and romantic piece is available (framed too if you like)

Today's painting, the sweet little thing that it is, is just may get some ooyey gooey sap.

Where it All Happens

"Where It All Happens"

Not sure what I was thinking when I titled this piece.
Not even sure if this is where it all happens on a steam engine,
but I am sure it probably is an important part of the train.

watercolor (11" x 14")
Waiting...why is it so hard?
Is it because we are in a hurry?
Is it because "our time is more precious than others"?

Waiting...why is it so hard?
Is it because we can't be present?
Is it because we are tired?

Waiting...why is it so hard?
I think its hard because it means we need to have complete faith that God knows what He is doing....
and let's be real, that's hard!

If you are interested in today's painting. It's $750 framed. email me for a payment plan.

Summer en Plein Air #9

 "Bailey Canyon Waterfall"
Watercolor (10" x 7")

So sad...summer is coming to a close.
This will probably be my last painting for the "Summer en Plein Air" series.
Today we hiked up Bailey Canyon in Sierra Madre to the waterfall.
As usual, dog frolicking in water.....
daughter frolicking along....
and me painting away.
The unusual part of the outing was on the hike back out,
We ran into a nice sized snake gobbling down a lizard....
Yucky and a bit frightening to come upon.
We re-grouped and continued on...all the while reflecting on what a fabulous summer we had.
Hope you all had a great summer too!

Today's painting is available,

A New Day

"A New Day, Pasadena City Hall Courtyard"
watercolor (16" x 12")

Some views always look the same.
Do we get tired of them, do we find comfort in them or do they frustrate us?
If your "views" are tiring or frustrating you,
what can you do differently change your view for tomorrow?

An Afternoon with a Friend

watercolor (11.5" x 6")

When two people meet,
and they share the same passion of painting,
an incredible thing can happen.
An afternoon get together
can vacillate from a major chit-chat event,
to sharing of "learned inside tips",
to the delight of pure silence...
with only the sound brushstrokes separating you.
Thank you Dana Cooper, I had a wonderful time!

Today's painting was painted in Dana Copper's lovely home and is available.
email me if you are interested.

The Filling Station

"The Filling Station, Old Towne Orange"
watercolor (12" x 16")

Todays piece is from last weeks demo at Chemers Gallery.
So much fun painting with friends, listening to the fabulous live music, and eating luscious Italian Ice.
This painting was a bit of challenge I have to say....
if you saw the reference photo you would see all that I had to take out,
and a few things to embellish on so as to make this piece work.
I wish life was more like that...
that God would let me whimiscally take things out and add to other things...
all to make a better picture.

Today's painting is available at Chemers Gallery.

Summer en Plein Air #8 -Sold!

"El Matador Beach, Malibu"
watercolor (7" x 10")

Being a native Southern Californian,
its always a treat when I discover a local place I haven't been to before.
Yesterday we went to the beach for a family day
(minus the dog, so assured a less chaotic adventure -see here for back story).
We ended up at this beach,
and a delightful place it peaceful and pictureseque!
And I actually got to do this piece start to finish en plein air.

(One Half) Summer en Plein Air #7 -Sold!

"Dog Beach, Huntington Beach"
watercolor (6" x 9")

Continuing on with my "Summer en Plein Air" series.
Yesterday we went to Dog Beach in Huntington Beach, Ca.
The whole family went...including the dog.
I have never seen so many dogs and surfers in one place before.
So very entertaining.
As entertaining as it was, it was very chaotic.
Throw in an umbrella that won't stay in the ground,
a dog that won't listen,
sand flying all over the place from all the dogs running around,
and people that have the nerve to set up camp right in line where I was painting....
Suffice it to say, I only started this painting en plein air and had to finish back at the studio...
hence the the title
"(One Half) Summer en Plein Air #7"

But which painting to post?
This little one was nearly the last painting I finished...and it turned out to be one of my favorites.

"Shopping in Beverly Hills, Via Rodeo"

off to lunch and shopping with your favorite gal pals.

Summer en Plein Aire #6

"Lifeguard Tower #1, Pacific Palisades"
watercolor (7" x 9")

Summer is in full swing here at the Hill Household.
And now that I am all painted out for the train show...even more free time!
Off to the beach we headed.
Daughter frolicking in the ocean,
Me under the umbrella, capturing this familiar sight.
My conundrum for the day?...our beach day started out foggy and overcast,
painting started out as such.
Half way through the painting the sun comes out...
Do I finish as I started ...grey and hazy?
or switch to bright sunny day?
Well, I decided to stay on as planned, ignoring my reality.
I kinda liked that..."ignoring the reality".

Today's painting is available,
just email me
