Alley, San Francisco Chinatown

"Alley, San Francisco Chinatown"
watercolor (20" x 10")
available at Chemers Gallery

Well I tried, and tried....well not really (if I were to be totally honest)... come up with a Christmas painting this year.
Seems nothing was coming I waited...still nothing.
So, here we are...days before image for the family Christmas card....
I tell myself "No worries, just do a 'Happy New Year' card" .....
but I have now found myself in a new pickle.
What is an appropriate painting for the new year!

Wishing you and yours a very blessed CHRISTmas!

Main and 5th Street, Los Angeles

"Main and 5th Street, Los Angeles"
watercolor (6" x 6")

A famililar perspective...I am sure.
Rest assured, I was in the passenger seat when I snapped the reference photo.
Can't say that is always the case, sometimes it gets a little hairy photographing while driving.
Shhhh...don't tell my husband.

Danielle's Grapes- SOLD

"Danielle's Grapes"
watercolor (16" x 12")

These lovely grapes were growing in our friends backyard.
We were having brunch in their patio over summer...a delightful time.
I glanced over to their grapevine...the sun was pouring over the ripening grapes.
I instantly popped up, grabbed my camera/phone and exclaimed "I have to paint these!"

Barnscape I

"Barnscape I"
watercolor (7" x 10")

A few years back I came across an estate sale, one of the rooms was a converted dark room....
in it I found boxes and boxes of old original black and white photos.
I spent about an hour pouring over them...they were marked at $1 a piece
(I suppose the curator/consignor felt the value of them).
Anyway, I eventually picked up about twenty (mostly barns).
So begins a series "Barnscapes"

This is the reference photo for "Barnscape I"

Today's piece is available on DPW ($95 opening bid)

La Quinta Light- SOLD

"La Quinta Light"
Watercolor (6" x 6")

I should call this painting "Multi-tasking".
This piece was painted while I was chatting on the phone.
With Kelley, its never a straight forward little chat...we are always all over the place.
Sharing photos, sharing websites, sharing art work, so we are constantly opening emails,
looking at web I said, we are all over the place.
If I say so myself, it is quite something that I was able to do this painting!

Oh...big announcement!!
Starting in January (monthly sessions)
Tuesday morning classes are already full....
but, Saturday morning has one space left!

Let me know if you are interested (Email me)
even if your desired session is full...I may be adding additional sessions in the future.

and are in season September through mid-December.
They are a treat to eat, so of course I had to paint them!

Holiday Grapes can be yours, bid here for $95.

The Number One Position- SOLD

"The Number One Position"
watercolor (9" x 12")

The Race of Life
What position are you in?
Some days I feel like I am out in front of the pack.
Some days, it just feels like I am all caught up in the middle.
Then...let's admit, there are those days...well, let's just not go there!
Well today, I wish upon you that you are in your "Number One Position",

San Gabriel Mission Bells-Sold!

"San Gabriel Mission Bells"
watercolor (6" x 6")

Yesterday, I went painting en plein air with my new outdoor painting pal Lizz Tucker.
We set up outside the mission...and both were captured with these bells.
Of course, our paintings came out very different with different perspectives....
but that is the delight in painting with a friend (besides the companionship and shared passion)
it's discovering to look at things differently.

Its a reminder that there is always a beginning and an end.
That what's old can become new again....change can be just around the corner.
I wonder what that change is, the one that is just around the corner?

Breakfast For One- SOLD!

"Breakfast For One"
watercolor (6" x 6")

Does breakfast taste any better when you are eating alone?
Well, I guess that depends on who you are, and what your life is like.
I imagine this fella has a whole lot going on in his days,
and this is a Saturday morning ritual for him.
His quiet time...his time away from the corporate hustle and bustle.
His time to wear a tee-shirt and sip on a double espresso.

"Blue Shutters at La Quinta Resort"
Watercolor (6" x 6")

La Quinta Resort and Spa is a historic hotel established in 1926.
It was originally built as a series of bungalows on 45 acres of fruit trees,
located at the foot of the Santa Rosa Mountains (near Palm Springs, Ca).
Now its a "go-to" place for golf and tennis tournaments, weekend get aways,
and lounging in any one of their 43 pools!

One of my latest commissions is to capture La Quinta Resort for the 2013 Provident Bank Calendar.
Today's painting and the next few ones are warm ups to get me in the right place for the bigger piece.

Chinatown, San Francisco- SOLD!

"Chinatown, San Francisco"
watercolor (12" x 12")

Do you ever get one of those "ah ha" moments?
Where you know that things are just gonna go in a certain direction?
For me (and my faith)...this a God moment....a beautiful moment to take in.
These moments may be huge life changers
 or a seemingly insignificant instant...
but all the while beautiful because I feel God's presence.
Today's painting was a beautiful "ah ha" moment for me.
Here's hoping you have a few "ah ha" moments today!

San Francisco, Leaving Chinatown

"San Francisco, Leaving Chinatown"
watercolor (12" x 16")

We went to San Francisco last week...was there for just 2 nights...44 hours total.
It was a fabulous time...loved it!
I took 440 photos...hmm that works out to 10 photos/hour...if I were awake 24/7.
So if you do the math of waking'd see that I had a very happy trigger finger.

My husband has determined that, with camera in hand, I am a danger to myself and the people around me...especially in a large busy city.
He at one point took the camera and designated himself
"Reference Photographer for J Hill Paintings"
Perhaps I need a special tee shirt made up
"Caution: artist aggressively seeking reference photos...approach with care!"

Interested in today's piece? email me.

"Mary's Memories"
watercolor (8" x 8")
SOLD (commission)

For Mary and her parents:

You two are gone, but I will remember you.
I will remember how you loved each other.
I will remember that even though you were so different  from each other,
you loved to be together.
I will remember how you both loved nature and being outdoors.
I will remember Dad how you sat with your legs crossed,
and Mom how you had a great sense of humor.
You two are gone, but I will always remember you.
