One day we were driving to our dear friends' house for a visit,

Luckily, my husband was driving slow enough,
and the window was down,
and I had my camera/phone at hand....
and the lighting was perfect.

It's hard to believe that its that time of year again.

The asistencia was built in 1830
as a ranch outpost for Mission San Gabriel Arcangel in Redlands, Ca.

Bass Lake 2

"Bass Lake 2"
watercolor (8" x 6")

One of my favorite places to go to decompress and recalibrate myself is to my parents house.
Not really because they are my parents (well that does help... love ya Mom and Dad!),
but because they live in the small town of Oakhurst, Ca.
Oakhurst is just 15 miles outside of Yosemite and a short 15-20 minute drive to Bass Lake.
And all the gorgeous greenry, rivers, and wildlife in between!
My parent's house is nestled under oak and pine tress on the edge of the Fresno River....
idyllic to say the least.
On our last trip up there we visited Bass Lake...
today's paintings are drawn from those moments.

"Bass Lake 1"
watercolor (6" x 6")

These "Bass Lake" paintings are available...special pricing for the two, email me if you are interested.

Independence Square in Quito, Ecuador

"Independence Square in Quito, Ecuador"
watercolor (7" x 10")

There are many things that I love about teaching private students.
One is that they often come up with the most unusual references to paint....
or even better,
they come back from their travels with great photos to choose from.
Thanks Fran, this was a fun one!

watercolor (22" x 22")

Isn't it funny how a name can pop into your head....
and it sticks!
"Bettina" came to me during yesterdays workshop.
I was right in the middle of teaching my students
that they too can paint a large elephant piece...just follow my 3 simple points:
1. Simply draw and paint shapes (do not focus on depicting an "eye" or the "floppy ear"),
2. Let the values do the descriptions, and
3. Use colors to make it read right

Anyway..."Bettina" is what came of it.
My students did so well, maybe next time you will join us?

Winderlea Vineyard

"Winderlea Vineyard"
watercolor (6" x 6")

One of the many treats of teaching watercolor painting
is that you can live vicariously through your students reference photos.
This private student spent the weekend visiting (and tasting) various wineries in Oregon.
Looks like a delightful place to be, including to paint and to taste the wines.

"Winderlea Vineyard" is available, click here if you are interested.

A Neighborly Spot - Sold!

"A Neighborly Spot"
watercolor (7" x 10")

Take a moment with me...
Let's a have a cup of tea.
Let's talk about how the days are getting longer
and that soon we will have ripe tomatoes.

Let's talk about the new family that moved in down the street
and wonder if they will join us in the annual block party.

Or let's not talk about a thing,
let's just feel the warm morning sun upon our faces.

Santa Ana Fountain

"Santa Ana Fountain"
watercolor (12" x 9'')

Today's painting is a re-work of an older piece.
I have been doing a little housekeeping in the studio,
this is the time when old paintings float up to surface....
and then the choice becomes... do I dump, play or salvage the painting?
For this one, I cropped it down from a 12" x 16"
(the whole right side wasn't working for me) to the current size of 12" x 9".
Then I punched some colors into the umbrellas,
and played up the colors in the fountain structure.
And I think I played a bit with the shadow area in front of the fountain. I think I can live with this one.

"Santa Ana Fountain" is available (special pricing),
click here if you are interested.
