Verdugo Hills Art Association to Host One Day Workshop
April 16th, 2016

In this one-day workshop we will paint a landscape scene composed of an old barn, rolling hills, blue sky and trees.  Students will learn how to handle these subjects with differentiating approaches, colors, brushstrokes, etc. This workshop is perfect for all skill levels, and will teach students how to set up a strong composition, creatively use color, use broad brush strokes and fun washes to create engaging and dynamic paintings. Students must bring their own watercolor materials. Suggested materials list and reference photo will be provided upon enrollment.

The reviews are in...the online course is a great success!

This is a super learning experience! - CS (10/2015)

I love this course!  It disciplines me to paint every week-usually I make several attempts at the assignment.  The feedback from Julie is spot-on and her paint-overs show me how a pro would improve my work. I know I have so far to go, but Julie is very encouraging-she takes me right where I am and helps me move forward.  There's no competition or comparison. Each lesson has clear focus and challenges me to learn more about the subject-and try to put it into practice.  Last week's lesson on color was very challenging for me and my initial attempt was terrible.  My first response was that I was too embarrassed to send it in-maybe I could just tell Julie I was too busy to do the assignment!  But over the weekend I tried again and the result was much better! I'm loving this adventure!  Thank you, Julie! - TM (10/2015)

"After taking private lessons with Julie for over two years, I thought my lessons would have to be infrequent since her recent move. When she offered the on-line class I felt it would be the perfect fit for me. I've found that I can truly see where I get stuck when Julie returns her suggestions for a more balanced painting. She also includes my painting along side a copy with the added touches. I can tell right away my areas of challenge. I've discovered as well that instead of being lead, I now listen and apply what she has already taught me, letting the painting talk to me. Having an assignment to turn in each week keeps me from making excuses why I can't paint, as well. I highly recommend giving it a try"- JT (10/2015)

"I'm really enjoying this online course as it fits my personality. I feel more relaxed being able to work in my home at my own pace. It's like having a private lesson. The course content is well organized and clearly presented. I really like having the info outlined and in front of me. Even though I've heard and seen some of this information before in other classes, the way it is broken down with examples is easy to follow and very informative. The feedback critique is helpful because it addresses the students specific areas and Julie does a paint over to show how to improve the painting. Looking forward to the next session" -ML (10/2015)

Private and Semi-Private classes:

Would you like to take your watercolor painting to a new level?

Do you work better with a more personal learning environment?

How about making that commitment to following your passion?
I would love to help you on your journey.

In each semi-private and private class,
I do a watercolor painting demo
(either a small painting start to finish or a continuation of a larger piece),
provide guided lessons to assist you in building a firm artist foundation in composition,
 value, color usage, techniques, etc.
We will either work on your paintings of choice, or a paint along, or an
assigned piece (always your choice).
Suffice it to say, in my small classes you will receive
individualized guidance for you to find and express your painting
passion, at a very personalized pace.

Studio is located in the Thousand Oaks, Ca area

Di-private classes are for you and a friend (class size = 2) ($100 each session)
These classes are truly personalized for you and a painting buddy. Together, we all come up with a structure that works and benefits you both (i.e. lesson plans, paint a longs, and/or demos)

Students must commit to a 4 week session block ($195 each person)
Classes are 2 hours long (4 sessions total).

Di-Private watercolor class
4 sessions (to be scheduled)

Private Classes ($100 each session)
2 hour, one-on-one session in my studio
or 100 minutes online mentoring/critiquing/lessons.

In our sessions (online or in studio) it can be any format that works for you....paint along, individualized lesson plans, simply critiquing of your paintings, personalized demos to see how one of
my paintings come to life, etc.
If you choose online sessions, I use a state of the art website that allows synchronized viewing and editing of images; therefore, we can review, critique and/or discuss paintings (yours or mine).

For the online sessions: It is totally at your discretion how you want to use your $100
credit. All in one session, or break it up into 15, 30, 45, etc minute sessions, or a
combination of sorts. Also we can schedule on a weekly or twice a week, routine
time...or we can schedule as needed.

Email me...I can give you more details on how it all works.

Testimonies from current students:

From Noelle S. (La Crescenta, Ca):

"With her academic background and artistic grace, Julie provides both technical skill and artistic freedom in her classes.  Julie accommodates all levels and works at your speed and comfort level.  From critiques to step by step demonstrations she gives her students the "A, B, C's" of watercolor painting.  Julie's dedication to her craft and sweet disposition are not only inspirational but a motivation for my own art.  The environment is safe and encouraging as our brush strokes falter and stumble in our humble execution.  In a short amount of time you see your work develop and grow and the spark of satisfaction is ignited.  My unlimited potential excites me as I discover my inner artist.  I highly recommend these classes to everyone and consider Julie Hill a blessing in my life. "

 From Karen Y. (Ohio)

"Recently I’ve had the opportunity to take private lessons from Julie Hill. I’ve enjoyed these sessions as I can get right to what I want to learn. I upload paintings or photos with specific challenges onto her website, and then have a one on one workshop with Julie (by telephone & internet) as she critiques & discusses my art. Want to know the best part? I can be sitting in my own home or studio while we talk about my latest paintings!

Right now I am in the middle of preparing for my own show. I’m nervous, but Julie is helping me plan for this experience. I’m learning about the business of art, along with painting methods as I travel on this journey with Julie.

Julie’s critiques of my paintings are invaluable. She has a keen sense of validating what I may be thinking as I am painting. You know, those small, dark voices that keep coming up while you paint? We not only discuss the challenges, but the  successes of what I am painting."

From Mary N. (Glendale, Ca)

"I was lucky to meet Julie a few months ago.   She is an amazing combination of brains, beauty, charm and grace which she applies to her teaching style.  Never impatient or negatively critical, she explains all elements – negative space, distance, shadowing, to name a few - that should go into a painting to produce amazing results.  I am lucky to be taking private lessons with her and always leave feeling both challenged and refreshed.   I highly recommend Julie for both improving and developing artistic skills.   And she’s fun too!"
Happy students....a private paint along!
